(More customer reviews)As a fan of Old Time Radio I thought this would be a fun microphone to have and use. Fun to look at yes, but not very useful to use. It's a terrible design, plain and simple.
The functioning, (mediocre), microphone is actually located in the base of the unit, between the volume control and mute knob. What is within the silver "microphone" housing beneath the "On the Air" crown is a (also mediocre) speaker. The result being you'll typically find yourself talking into the speaker. Using the vol or mute buttons at any time causes unwanted handling noise. Also the unit is made of such lightweight plastic that any touch tends to send it skittering across the table.
Particularly unwanted and annoying is the mute feature which causes the "On the Air" sign to blink when muted. Each blink causes a loud distinct electronic noise, making the mute essentially useless to use when recording and annoying to use anytime. There is no apparent way to turn off the flashing "feature".
It is dirt cheap, and it is fun to look at. If you buy it, buy it for that. It makes a great display item. But as a microphone, it's pretty useless. Whatever the price, I would have liked it much better with the mic in the "microphone", the speaker in the base, (or none at all), and no flashing buzz when muted.
