Wall-E - Ultimate Wall-E Review

(More customer reviews)My 28 year old boyfriend and I purchased one of these for the holidays because we are both big fans of the movie and its message.
To start with getting Wall-E out of the box is like breaking into Fort Knox. I'd recommend having some strong shears, and a pair of needle-nose pliers on hand, as well as some double-A batteries, a small phillip's screwdriver, and 5 hours to charge his motor pack the first time you play with him. This is especially helpful to parents who want it ready to go on Christmas morning.
Speaking of parents, I will say now that parts of Wall-E aren't the strongest and that small children should be supervised at all times during play. I don't have any kids to "experiment" on to see just how resilient things are and my review is that of an adult collector and should be taken as such. Just covering my bases.
Now when ready to go Wall-e has an array of movements from just head controls, to emotions, to motor controls. It could take up to an hour to get the whole manual down. Once you have it he behaves convincingly and damned adorably. His sounds and noises are right out of the film and you can make him do just about anything. He's a great fully-functional remote controlled vehicle, pretty much. So, to summarize...
Pros:
-- The ultimate collectible for Wall-E fans.
-- Cute, entertaining, and complex movement and interactions.
-- Several modes to play with, from full control to automatic wandering.
-- Treads make movement easy, even on carpet or uneven flooring.
-- Can act as a speaker for your MP3 or CD player.
Cons:
-- Takes some time to learn, not fully intuitive out of the box.
-- Complex and probably breakable by the very young or irresponsible.
-- His motors are a bit loud, the whirring makes it hard to play quietly.
-- Some little touches are missing: his "eyebrows" don't raise, and it would have been great if they'd made his solar charge meter glow, or even turned it into a battery indicator.
Overall, a great product if you can afford it, but not really a great choice for really young fans. A+

(More customer reviews)This toy is TINY. I guess I should have piad closer attention to the description, but it is the tiniest toy ... like the size of "Little People". Also, it goes so slow the kids didn't play with. It might be worth it if you bought it at a buck store or something.

(More customer reviews)In the package, the U-Command Wall-E looks great, and for the MSRP it's a grood deal too. However, there are a couple of design issues that can seriously detract from the play value of this toy. The worst is that Wall-E is very unstable, which means that unless you are running him on a perfectly flat, smooth surface with absolutely no obstructions around him, he'll spend most of his time on his back like a flailing turtle. This is true even on very short pile commercial carpeting. Also, you should know that since this uses an infrared remote control, the R/C features generally only work if you're pointing the control directly at the U-Command Wall-E. Most kids will not expect or understand this limitation, which may lead to frustration during play.
I still think it's one of the best Wall-E toys made, simply because it offers so many features for the price. And, with a little creative inginuity, you can solve the instibility problem by attaching a small stabilizer to Wall-E's back that will prevent him from falling over while he is dancing, turning, reversing direction, or contending with an obstruction in his path. Once you've overcome that issue, this is will almost certainly become one of your favorite Wall-E toys.
