(More customer reviews)OK, I usually don't do this whole review thing, but I couldn't pass on this one. It's a big price tag heading under many Christmas trees this year. My son pooled all of his recent birthday money and toy savings to buy an N.S.E.C.T. I will start with a positive. The walking feature and tank like controls are very cool. The N.S.E.C.T.'s legs can be controlled independently giving it the ability to turn around in place and is quite fun to drive. That said, the is a lot that can go wrong with a toy like this and we are returning our second today and calling it quits on the whole idea.
Our first N.S.E.C.T. would not fire at all despite the loud clacking noise it made when trying. Our second will actually launch darts in the 3 to 5 foot range (just shy of the 25 feet listed) with a similar loud clacking. Both have had difficulties with raising and lowering the missile launcher. The ridges on the wings seem to catch the edge of the launcher every once and awhile.
This is a complicated piece of machinery with loads of moving parts to give out. Unfortunately, ours won't be staying around long enough to comment on the durability. Beware that it is also loud and cannot walk on hard floors.
If this toy is destine to find its way under your Christmas tree, I would recommend pre-charging the battery (it needs a 5.5 hour charge to start). It is very easy to remove without disturbing much of the packaging. Just open the back of the package and slide the inside structure out. The battery and charger are on the underside.

Boxing Fighter Robots Review

(More customer reviews)These were a Christmas gift specifically asked for by our sons, ages 11 & 13. What a disappointment! One of the robots didn't work no matter what we did or how many batteries we changed. The other one worked, I suppose, but the actions it performed were very limited and sluggish, and it, too, died after a very short period of time (about 20 minutes of frustrated use). Definitely NOT worth the money spent. We will be returning it and not replacing it. I'd give it less than one star if that were an option.

Wall-E - Ultimate Wall-E Review

(More customer reviews)My 28 year old boyfriend and I purchased one of these for the holidays because we are both big fans of the movie and its message.
To start with getting Wall-E out of the box is like breaking into Fort Knox. I'd recommend having some strong shears, and a pair of needle-nose pliers on hand, as well as some double-A batteries, a small phillip's screwdriver, and 5 hours to charge his motor pack the first time you play with him. This is especially helpful to parents who want it ready to go on Christmas morning.
Speaking of parents, I will say now that parts of Wall-E aren't the strongest and that small children should be supervised at all times during play. I don't have any kids to "experiment" on to see just how resilient things are and my review is that of an adult collector and should be taken as such. Just covering my bases.
Now when ready to go Wall-e has an array of movements from just head controls, to emotions, to motor controls. It could take up to an hour to get the whole manual down. Once you have it he behaves convincingly and damned adorably. His sounds and noises are right out of the film and you can make him do just about anything. He's a great fully-functional remote controlled vehicle, pretty much. So, to summarize...
Pros:
-- The ultimate collectible for Wall-E fans.
-- Cute, entertaining, and complex movement and interactions.
-- Several modes to play with, from full control to automatic wandering.
-- Treads make movement easy, even on carpet or uneven flooring.
-- Can act as a speaker for your MP3 or CD player.
Cons:
-- Takes some time to learn, not fully intuitive out of the box.
-- Complex and probably breakable by the very young or irresponsible.
-- His motors are a bit loud, the whirring makes it hard to play quietly.
-- Some little touches are missing: his "eyebrows" don't raise, and it would have been great if they'd made his solar charge meter glow, or even turned it into a battery indicator.
Overall, a great product if you can afford it, but not really a great choice for really young fans. A+

(More customer reviews)The toy looks great out of the box, and works well once it is transformed into a truck. After a little practice, my son was able to maneuver it pretty well. The downside is that the conversion is difficult (at least for my 4 year old and husband), and the antennae is pretty fragile. It was broken within a couple of days of use. For something like this, a more sturdy antennae, for example, encapsulated in rubber, would be a pretty good improvement. Overall, it's a nice toy, but it could be a bit more sturdy.

Pro Servo HS-422:Universal Review

(More customer reviews)I've used hundreds of these servos in animatronics and robot building. They're wonderful little unit subject to the limitations one would expect from a small servo.
Strengths:
-Inexpensive
-Reliable
-Nylon gears - I have found that the HS-422 deluxe servo nylon gears actually last considerably longer than Karbonite gear (and more expensive) servos when they are operated for a long period at relatively light loads. It appears that Karbonite on Karbonite wear is greater than nylon on nylon wear at these low loads over long periods.
Weaknesses
- They make standard servo noises when they move - though not the high pitched digital whine.
- Like most standard servos they cannot take a 100% duty cycle for extended periods of time without special arrangements for cooling.
- Nylon gears - Karbonite gears are stronger than Nylon and might even last longer under heavy loads. It all depends on how you're using them.A caveat - the company that I work for is thinking about selling these servos here. Its not our main business but we use so many of them and trust them so much we figured why not.

(More customer reviews)Getting this robot out of the box is a job in itself. Have scissors handy and be prepared to do a lot of cutting and tearing. Also have a few screwdrivers around, because you need to unscrew the battery compartments to open them. Since I didn't know all this, it took me more than 20 minutes to wrestle the robot out of its packaging (which got fairly mangled despite my best efforts to be careful), find an appropriate screwdriver, and finally get things operating.
About the operation: not bad. The robot can bend its body well, all things considered, and the range of movement is pretty good. It did have a bit of trouble moving backwards and forwards on my carpeted floor (low-pile; NOT shag) and as for turning right or left, the efforts were painful to watch. The robot exerted a lot of energy but could only move in little hitches, and it took many labored seconds to fully turn to the right. It did do much better when on the very smooth kitchen floor.
Best functions: the karate chops, complete with sound effects; the dance program; "listen" program; wolf whistle; high five; and the arm movements.
Most frustrating: trying to get the robot to pick up items. They must be VERY carefully placed, and also just the right size and height. They also can't be very heavy at all. The robot could pick up a pencil when I held it up off the ground, but the pencil then slipped through its hand. It was able to grasp a small toy, but could not pick it up because even that light weight was too much. The arms are NOT very strong. For instance, if you command the robot to raise its arm, and then place your hand over the arm while exerting only a small amount of pressure, the arm will stop moving pretty quickly. It has little power.
As for durability, the robot's head seems quite delicate and loose. I kept worrying that it would fall off. And the black paint chips fast to reveal white underneath. When I bought the robot, it already had a few small areas where the paint was chipped. After I gently and carefully used it for about a half hour, it had a few more chipped areas. In some of the robot's movements, it actually strikes its own body, which doubtless caused some of the chipping. Example: when my Robosapien lowers its arms all the way, it usually smacks its legs. Aside from the paint and the head, it does seem reasonably hardy.
The novelty value wore off quickly. At first I was eager to try it out, but after maybe 15 minutes of putting it through its paces I found myself losing interest. Later, my young cousin played with it and enjoyed it for a while, but after a couple of days he turned to other toys and the Robosapien sat to the side, gathering dust.
Honestly? This toy is a disappointment. If you want a cool robot toy, try the R2D2 droid, which probably goes for a lower price by now and can play neat games. I've owned an R2 for over a year and still play with it fairly often. I just don't see this happening with Robosapien.

WowWee Rovio Wi-Fi Enabled Robotic WebCam Review

(More customer reviews)As a previous reviewer said, I really, really want to love my Rovio. It has great potential, but these first units are awful. WowWee should not have succumbed to pressure to release it before it's ready. I can't recommend anybody buy one at this time, for the following reasons:
1. The robot won't play back paths with any accuracy. I've given mine clear paths with no obstacles, and it still manages to run into chairs and the TV. And that's with the NAV signal showing strong. Maybe if you had your own empty gym, it'd work great, but if you live in a real house with furniture, the robot won't navigate reliably.
2. The robot usually runs out of battery power before it manages to dock, so the self-recharging feature is a bust.
3. Audio doesn't work (in or out) on any browser but Internet Explorer.
4. The camera positioning options are poor (low, a little lower, and let's-stare-at-the-ceiling are your only choices).
5. The battery life is poor too. Maybe an hour if you're lucky, and since it won't make it back to the recharger, Rovio will die and be useless from remote.
6. The headlight is absolutely laughable. The camera can't be used at all in low-light conditions.
7. While there's almost no forward illumination, Rovio will annoy you with the pulsating blue LEDs on top.
8. My dock died after less than two weeks of ownership.
I'm sure I could think of more reasons to wait for a new version before buying, but those are just the ones that I immediately recall as unacceptable. This product simply doesn't work.
Bye bye, Rovio. You're going back to Amazon.

WowWee Roboreptile Robotic Reptile Review

(More customer reviews)I picked up a Roboreptile last night (the cats were getting too complacent after all) and it's definitely a big improvement over the earlier Roboraptor (from what I've seen of that one).
I'm not sure how much long term entertainment one can get from one of these, but it's an interesting novelty item. When I was like five years old this would have been just the coolest thing though. Robophiles and younger kids will love them.
The one caveat I wanted to offer is that the Roboreptile does not work so hot on carpeted floors. His main locomotion technique is basically "shuffling" and this tends to fail on a soft surface. On any hard surface though he gets around pretty good.
So three out of five on this one I think.
Oh, and the cats took to him surprisingly well. Doesn't look/smell enough like anything that evolution has programmed them to be afraid of I guess :-)
One more thing: Getting him out of the box was a major pain. Apparently they're concerned about packs of them escaping and running amok devouring Barbies in the stores at night or something, since he's wired, taped, and screwed to the cardboard which is then glued into the outer box, so set aside a good 20-30 minutes for the unpacking process. And a philips screwdriver that's less than 1/4" in diameter and at least 3 inches long to unscrew him (and get the battery doors open).

But, it's also harder to balance and pose than I expected and it seems like it's fragile (though that's just a feeling, nothing on it has broken and I've had no problems). I wish the robot was a little taller or the stand was a little shorter (and not purple), but otherwise the faces and accessories are good and it's utterly unique in my growing robot collection.

Roboscooper Review

(More customer reviews)Wow I'm surprised to see the negative reviews on Roboscooper. I've had nothing but a fun experience with mine. His sensors are great at locating and picking up objects and he has a wonderful, quirky (typical wowwee robot) personality. A few cardboard boxes of various sizes come with the robot and the instructions suggest using those as a size guide for what Roboscooper can pick up. Its solid advice because larger objects will likely not clear the cargo bed back causing Roboscooper's arms to get stuck. As long as you stick to smaller objects and don't try to pick up a table leg or other stationary object, you should have no problem with this robot. I've had my Roboscooper operating for several hours now without any problems/issues.
Another reviewer mentioned problems with installing the batteries but I found no issue with that either. You only need 1 Phillips screwdriver to remove the battery doors on the remote and the robot itself. The battery door on the robot does keep the batteries in place and needs to be held firmly down when screwing the cover back on, but its no different or no more difficult than similar toys of this type...
In conclusion I recommend Roboscooper because he's functional, entertaining and unique.
