(More customer reviews)I bought 2 T-Maxxs for the boys (7&9) for Christmas. Assembly is simple. Run the antenna through the antenna tube and pin on the body. Truck comes with a DVD that walks you through the break in process. Takes a while but it is simple. The boys handled it with very little help from dad.
After the break in the trucks are ready to run and you can really appreciate the difference between a toy and a nitro powered hobby level truck. These things scream and are super fast. Don't bother unless you have a large open area to run it in.
The trucks seem to be well made and sturdy. We live by the coast so rust is a problem with almost everything but the T-Maxx is all aluminum and plastic so this should not be a problem. The range is obviously more than sufficient since I run them as far as I can see them and never lose control of the truck.
The package comes with a glow plug, nitro filler bottle and all the tools you need to make adjustments, change tires, replace plugs etc.
One of my boys ran his into a steel pole at full speed and damaged the front right suspension and shocks. I looked up the parts and they are all available cheap on EBay. Then I called Traxxas and asked if I should rebuild it myself or send it in and although they assured me the rebuild is simple and inexpensive I think I will let them handle it this time. They said we could just box it up and send it in and they will do the repair for a nominal fee.
Customer service from the repair department was great. I got a real person who was knowledgeable and friendly. That never happens these days.
It is nice to know that no matter what new and innovative methods my kids find to break these trucks, that every single component is easily replaceable and that the parts are inexpensive. There are also hundreds of upgrades out there. I have ordered a new body a roll cage and a wheelie bar as well as some replacement parts to have on hand.
We were a little nervous about getting 'grown-up' race trucks for the boys but having done so I could not be more pleased. These are awesome!
I will update with more on the customer service experience once we get the truck back.
Update
After speaking with the Traxxas repair department I decided to try to do the repair myself. Traxxas only makes the schematics available to dealers but I found some online through a different website and I used this to make a list of all the parts I needed. I ordered them online and when they arrived, my son and I put the truck back together in about an hour. To work on this truck you only need the tools that came with the truck and a #2 phillips screwdriver. In doing the repair I was amazed by how well built the truck is. Everything is built to tight tollerances and there was obviously much thought put into rebuilding the trucks. Every single piece is easily replaced even by a novice such as myself.
Now for my one and only gripe. Traxxas needs to put the schematics on the website. You have a product that is rebuildable but not easily rebuildable without instructions. I understand that you want to give your dealers an edge concerning repairs but the benefit to dealers in this instance does not outweigh the sacrifice created in the trade off by diminishing the overall experience of the end user.

Rokenbok Conveyor Company Start Set Review

(More customer reviews)My almost five-year old son received this as a Christmas present and has had the greatest time with it. We were a little skeptical about whether it would be easy enough for him since it is very intricate, but he is so good with Legos and Knex that we tried it. Originally we were looking for something more interactive than Legos but less complicated than an Erector set. This fit the need exactly.
It really is fun. Even my husband likes it =) The dump truck works by remote, and it drives around, picks up the balls, and dumps them in the quarry. The quarry is automatically programmed to work the conveyor, which takes the balls up to the yellow slide, one by one, and sends them down the chute... either falling into the storage bins up top or into a big collecting bin on the bottom. The dump truck can then pick up the balls from the bin on the floor or the storage bins in the air, and start all over.
It is pretty neat. For my five-year old, who has never had a remote toy before, he can play with the truck for quite awhile. And a month later, he still brings it out every day. We just keep the apparatus assembled and all he needs to do is slip in the cartridge for the truck, turn on the unit, and it's ready to go.
It is a little more difficult to put together than Legos. Mostly because the pieces need a bit more force and carefulness to snap together. Also the directions are not as clear as Legos' are. It took a couple hours with granddad to assemble just right.
It took him a little while to master the remote... it is actually more like a video game controller, which he had never used, and is pretty sensitive. (Takes two hands, use of rolling thumb technique). It takes some fooling around with, even as an adult, to drive carefully and get the truck to back up just right. But even my two and three year olds can drive the truck straight down the hallway just by pressing the forward button. It is probably ideal for a six or seven year old, or a child experienced with video games already.
That said, it's not a toy for toddlers or hyper young children (at least, not without supervision). It takes some focus and respect. My own five year old once got a Lego light (tiny) stuck in the dump truck insides and we almost ruined it, taking it apart to get the light out. Yet for the most part, it's a very durable toy, and the pieces snap together strongly so you can pick up the apparatus and carry it without splitting apart. But don't let your toddler or pet fool around with the dump truck, sending unit, or cartridges. The little balls are obvious choking hazards (EXACTLY the right size of a baby or dog's throat). And if pieces come off the apparatus, it can be a little tricky to get them back on just right... they require a little more force and finesse than most little boys have.
That said, it's a great buy. Sending unit and remote are sold separately, so it's expensive. And it needs several Double As (6?) and one 9-volt battery. But matching Rokenbok sets can be added without buying extra accessories (unless you want another controller for a second child). So it's tempting to want to invest in your own RokenbokLand =)

The Traxxas Bandit XL-5 is a popular 1/10 scale model remote control buggy capable of 35+ MPH speeds right out of the box. Traxxas is a leading RC manufacturer based in Plano Tx. The assembled buggy is about a foot long and weighs in at about 3 lbs. The Bandit buggy style has been around since 1995 and shares many parts with the Rustler. Currently there are 2 available new models, the 2405 as seen here and the 2407 also known as the Bandit VXL. Sticking with the 2407 as seen here, the buggy is on and off road capable in wet and dry conditions due to Traxxas engineers creating waterproof electronics. The Bandit XL-5 is rated for skill level 1 for ease of set-up, maintenance, and support. It's important to consider that it also has a "training" mode with reduced power to make learning to drive easier and fun at the same time (not to mention safer). Currently, new Traxxas Bandits come with everything needed to get up and running with the exception of 8AA batteries for the transmitter. Parts are readily available from hobby stores that carry the Traxxas brand and the internet.
The Driving:
Setting up is easy, basically charge the battery, plug it in, turn it on and your off.
The Bandit is fast, fun, and durable. It can handle almost any terrain from packed snow and asphalt to dirt and light mud. Plowed fields and forest floors are the only places that come to mind that may not work in the Bandits favor. Driving is easy and intuitive with the transmitter trigger and wheel control. Both throttle and steering is proportional, meaning turn a little and the wheels turn a little. Lefty's may find the right handed steering a little getting used to. With all the speed and power built into the Bandit it's good to know that they are also durable. Even with reasonable care I have flipped and tumbled the Bandit in the dirt, driven into fences, and jumped and landed various ways and the bandit keeps going, usually still on it's feet (or tires)(check youtube for videos). Currently the supplied battery pack will give you 10-20 minutes driving time per charge. This leads to purchasing faster chargers and more batteries which cost about $40 for a charger and between $20-$100 for a battery. A word on safety, at top speeds the 3 lb weight can hit something as hard as a hammer. The batteries produce 3000-8000 milli-amps, more than enough for very serious shocks, burns, and worse. Aftermarket Li-Po batteries have a whole host of cautionary statements. Drivers/owners/buyers should exercise appropriate caution.
Moving up:
Even your basic Bandit has a whole host of upgradable parts available, aluminum replacement pieces, tires, electronics and motors, even the gearing can be changed to better adapt to pavement or dirt. If your board with driving your Bandit around the neighborhood there are RC clubs that sponsor racing and other activities. It's a good overall experience for young and old alike.

(More customer reviews)This car runs great out of the box,I bought a 3ooo battery pack and it gives it alot more power,my Rustler is faster,but not by a whole lot.I had some of the parts to break,and when I sent them in I received Graphite replacement parts.The car turns on a dime,has good acceleration and a decent top end,jumps awesome and it must have a lower pinion gear because it seems to pull fairly well also,even in short grass.Plus,it runs about 5 min longer on a battery then my rustler.For the price,it is an awesome car,and it upgrades very easy.I would definatly recomend this car to anyone looking to get into the hobby.

AFA Racing iROCK 4x4 Rock Crawler 1/8 RTR Review

It ran great for about 3 min then it malfuntioned. I had to Email Integy about the ESC not working, it took 3 days for an Email response and i have to Mail my ESC to them in Califorinia from Peoria IL. So It will be fun to play with when I get the Part returned to me from Integy.

(More customer reviews)My son got this RC car for Christmas 2010. It comes mostly pre-assembled in the box with only minor parts to put on (the antennas, for example). This is a lot of car for the money and it does go fast, especially with an upgraded battery.
Pros:
Comes complete with rechargeable battery, charger and radio control
Easy to use pistol-grip type controller
No set-up required other than adding the batteries and putting on the antennas
Fast and fun
Looks good
Easy to upgrade the battery from most any hobby store for more speed and a longer run time.
Four-wheel-drive is impressive, especially in gravel or dirtCons:
Run time is only about 10 minutes (may be longer in warmer weather).
Uses the same battery in the car for the drive motor and the receiver. When the battery gets low the car will just stop. Releasing the throttle and pulling it will get the car going again but the time between stops gets shorter each time the car is restarted. It's a little annoying but is a good indicator that the battery is almost dead.
Only includes battery for the motor and receiver (in the car), not for the controller. It takes 8 AA batteries.
Rechargeable battery is Ni-Cad and we found out that it's no longer a technology of choice. When I went to buy another battery the people at the hobby store thought the battery I brought was old and was surprised to find that it was brand new. The new battery of choice is NMh and cost between $20 and $60 depending on how many mili-amps you want.
Old Ni-Cad chargers don't work on the new NMh batteries so don't expect to be able to use that charger you had from your old RC car days. The new charger cost about $40.
Included battery charger is not a quick charger
Spare parts are impossible to find. After a week my son ran his car into a mailbox damaging the front, right wheel and suspension. The owner's manual has an exploded view with all the parts and part numbers but there is no information on how to order them and no amount of Internet searching could find parts for that particular car. I took it to a hobby store and they looked over and said that they did not have any replacement parts other than the wheel. The only solution they could offer was to rebuild the entire suspension with all new parts. The company that makes this car (Heng-Long) does make spare parts for other toys they sell (RC tanks, for example) so the possibility exists for them to offer them for this car in the future.
Since the car is only $135 (compared to $95 Tamiya cars without a radio or battery) I thought it was a good deal for a first "real" RC car. Now I'm not so sure. Having spare parts available is worth a lot. I have tried to repair the broken parts and rebuilt some parts from scratch but the repairs didn't last. Now we're stuck with a one-month old toy that is inoperable and awaiting another fix. My best option so far is to give it to the hobby store and see if they can rebuild it (they will have to match both the left and right with new parts) or buy another one and use the broken one for spares. Money that I could have spent to buy a car with available spares to begin with.
Bottom line: I would spend the extra money to get a car with a proven record (Tamyia, Losi, etc.) with spare parts available at any RC hobby store.

TYCO R/C The World of Cars MACK Transporter Review

(More customer reviews)My 3 1/2 year old son got this for Christmas. It's easy for him to operate the remote. You turn the wheel to steer left and right, and push forward to go, or push backward to reverse. He loves putting his cars inside of it. The only thing he has trouble with is the upper ramp, once its down it's hard for him him to get the ramp to lock into its "up" position so he can close the lower ramp. The best feature, in this adult's opinion, is that all of the parts that have broken off OTHER big trucks we've had (side mirrors, exhaust pipes, etc, are actually rubber, not plastic. So they bend and don't break. We have short carpeting and vinyl flooring in our house and it does fine on either. Overall he loves it, and I feel the Amazon price was fair. So we're both happy.

Tuffoam Park Flyer Plane R/C F-50 Fokker, 27.095 Mhz Review

(More customer reviews)Unfortunately it seems the aircraft came with a dead NIMH battery thet wont hold a charge. This has made the plane virtually unfyable as it will not run for any length of time to even get airborne for more than 10 seconds. Assuming a new and decent battery this aircraft might be ok, but there has to be virtually no wind, and control is difficult because there are no control surfaces, just variable engine power to make turns. It is hard to recommend it based on this fact. If you want something that is at least more predictable in control, go for a kit that has elevator and rudder or aileron control surfaces and servos etc. If nothing else, this plane has taught me a good basic bit of R/C knowledge as I tried to problem solve its various issues.

It provides awesome acceleration, great 4WD traction, low center of gravity for pretty tight turns and high ground clearance for making a smooth transition from pavement to grass/dirt/gravel. The included Lipo battery is another standout, holds its power for a solid 20+ minutes between charges. You really can't go wrong with this RC!

(More customer reviews)Another purchase for my grandson and although he is enjoying playing with it, it is a mess. Plane is all styrofoam and had to be put together. First time he flew it, it flew for about 10 seconds and crashed down nose first. Pushed the nose inward and all the wings fell off. Lost the landing gear. Had to keep repairing it with packing tape. Antennea broke off of the radio controller. All this happened within the first half hour. Wouldn't recommend this at all. But the grandson loves it. lol

Wall-E - Ultimate Wall-E Review

To start with getting Wall-E out of the box is like breaking into Fort Knox. I'd recommend having some strong shears, and a pair of needle-nose pliers on hand, as well as some double-A batteries, a small phillip's screwdriver, and 5 hours to charge his motor pack the first time you play with him. This is especially helpful to parents who want it ready to go on Christmas morning.
Speaking of parents, I will say now that parts of Wall-E aren't the strongest and that small children should be supervised at all times during play. I don't have any kids to "experiment" on to see just how resilient things are and my review is that of an adult collector and should be taken as such. Just covering my bases.
Now when ready to go Wall-e has an array of movements from just head controls, to emotions, to motor controls. It could take up to an hour to get the whole manual down. Once you have it he behaves convincingly and damned adorably. His sounds and noises are right out of the film and you can make him do just about anything. He's a great fully-functional remote controlled vehicle, pretty much. So, to summarize...
Pros:
-- The ultimate collectible for Wall-E fans.
-- Cute, entertaining, and complex movement and interactions.
-- Several modes to play with, from full control to automatic wandering.

-- Takes some time to learn, not fully intuitive out of the box.
-- Complex and probably breakable by the very young or irresponsible.
-- His motors are a bit loud, the whirring makes it hard to play quietly.
-- Some little touches are missing: his "eyebrows" don't raise, and it would have been great if they'd made his solar charge meter glow, or even turned it into a battery indicator.
Overall, a great product if you can afford it, but not really a great choice for really young fans. A+
