(More customer reviews)We had experienced the same problems the other two reviewers had -- poor instructions and inability to find a spot for the AA batteries. If you look at the car's "exhaust pipe" you will see a small screw with a small black piece that pivots. Move this piece to the side and you should be able to flip the exhaust pipe up and find the spot for the 3 AAs.
I can hear the kids playing with it now so I gave it a slightly better review. If for some reason they really enjoy it, I'll upgrade our rating.
