Tuffoam Park Flyer Plane R/C F-50 Fokker, 27.095 Mhz Review

Unfortunately it seems the aircraft came with a dead NIMH battery thet wont hold a charge. This has made the plane virtually unfyable as it will not run for any length of time to even get airborne for more than 10 seconds. Assuming a new and decent battery this aircraft might be ok, but there has to be virtually no wind, and control is difficult because there are no control surfaces, just variable engine power to make turns. It is hard to recommend it based on this fact. If you want something that is at least more predictable in control, go for a kit that has elevator and rudder or aileron control surfaces and servos etc. If nothing else, this plane has taught me a good basic bit of R/C knowledge as I tried to problem solve its various issues.

Pico J-3 FD ARF Slow Flyer (Fuselage Version) Review

Pico J-3 FD ARF Slow Flyer (Fuselage Version)

(More customer reviews)
For the amount of addtional parts I put in to build this thing, it's worth it if you bargain hunt. To get this kit in the air, I spent $26 for a Hobbyking USA warehouse radio w/micro receiver, $10 for a GWS 2-amp brushed ESC, and $6 for two servos (already had the battery). I enjoyed this plane so much after not liking it at first sight that I bought a second one from Hobbyzone. I also have the Hobbyzone Champ that came complete w/TX, ESC/receiver, everything ready and to me, the Champ offered about the same value. However, this plane teaches the beginner RC plane modeler about building, about center of gravity, about really slow flying for a big airplane. The Hobbyzone Champ is awesome for a first timer but this GWS plane is good for a second plane and to get into building. I checked GWS' RC forums and they have a great reputation for making affordable quality kits.
It's difficult and expensive to complete this Pico Cub with the suggested micro parts (ie GWS receiver and GWS servos) but if you go to your local hobby shop you can get other brands that are lighter and cheaper, then it's wprth it. This Pico model has thin foam and came cracked in both fuselages. Had to glue and tape before even starting to fit the pieces. The retail box packing was flimsy but the pieces inside were packed okay so the seller should have placed it in a more rugged outer box. I will continue to buy from toymaker GWS in the future.
Two months later, it's built and flown several times and it's an okay, probably just slightly average value in terms of cash spent to the fun of flying this plane. The fuselage foam is old tech but the wing and tail section is better. The push rods are old tech - GWS needs to go with carbon fiber.
Experienced builders with spare parts that's needed to complete this plane will have an easier time. But they would probably know to buy foam sheets from a Home Depot and make a plane that flies as wellas this for half the cost.
Only recommend this for experienced builders but the value comes in the joy of flying this at a nice slow speed. It's also a very good plane to teach new flyers or just to amaze kids with by it's floating slow speed.
It's a sight to see this medium sized flyer (40" wingspan) floating along at 5 mph or even less with the slightest wind.
Another plus is this plane can carry the keychain camera with ease and doesn't struggle unlike the HobbyZone Champ. Also, you can see this plane clearly at 300 yards away unlike the Champ that blends into the background or seemingly disappears from view due to its small size compared to this GWS model.
Here's two Youtube videos I made using/flying this plane:

What could be more fun than flying a scale-looking J-3 Cub in the grassy comfort of your favorite park on a still, sunny afternoon-or-when Mother Nature is not as hospitable, being able to fly that same plane in the climate-controlled comfort of the local gymnasium? We couldn't think of much else either-at least we couldn't after we flew the GWS Pico Cub FD. What a blast! This fantastic flying foam kit is quite possibly the best flying slow flyer we have seen to date. The Pico Cub FD goes together easily in as little as two hours. Just join the fuselage halves, glue on the tail surfaces, join the wing halves, install the power system and flightpack, and fasten the wing with a rubber band. The kit includes an IPS power system and requires a micro flightpack that is not included with the kit. Completely assembled, the kit weighs just over 8 1/2 ounces. We found for both performance and simplicity's sake, the GWS Naro Flightpack is the ideal choice for this kit, since GWS designed the Pico Cub FD with this system in mind. The Naro Flightpack is made up of two GWS Naro BB Servos, a GWS 2-amp speed control, a GWS 4-channel micro-receiver, and a 270mAh 7.2V battery pack.We had an absolute blast flying the Pico Cub FD. Possibly the coolest thingabout this plane is that it can be flown indoors or outdoors in light wind. The plane flies in the 6-11 mph range, which makes it slightly faster than some indoor slow flyers and a little slower than most park flyers. Maneuverability rather than speed is most important when you're talking slow or park flyers, and this is where the little Pico Cub FD excels. Slow speed handling is excellent, with positive control authority right up to the stall, which, incidentally, is so tame as to be a non-event.We don't expect the Pico Cub FD will break any time-to-climb records, but the included IPS power system provides ample juice for tricks like rolling takeoffs and diving entries into loops. We consistently enjoyed

Great Planes Flatana FlatOut 3D EP Park Flyer ARF Airplane Review

This plane is awesome to fly, but also requires a lot of skill--spend many hours practicing on a simulator or with a plane that comes mostly pre-assembled before flying this one. The motor that comes with the plane doesn't have enough power--you will want to upgrade to a brushless system right away. Use blue masking tape to hold parts in place when assembling and have both foam safe CA glue and 5-minute epoxy on hand. This plane took much more time and care to assemble than I had anticipated when I bought it.

FlatOuts are made of durable, high-quality pre-printed foam, require only a radio and minimal assembly, and are priced to be amazingly affordable. The category of "flat foamy" R/C model airplanes isn t newhowever the approach that Great Planes is taking with the FlatOuts Series is new. As with all Great Planes models, superior engineering makes all the difference. Great Planes has created a complete line of innovative hardware - including hinges, pushrod holders, brackets, z-bends and much more - that is far superior, and is included with every FlatOuts model! The result is a plane that s straighter, stonger and faster to build.

Night Flight Module: Slo-V, FBC, ABC, FC2, FBF Review

Night Flight Module: Slo-V, FBC, ABC, FC2, FBF
Average Reviews:

I'm an amateur RC pilot and found it almost impossible to fly with this unit at night. It's just too hard to keep your orientation. I've only used it once. After a very short flight I was lucky not to lose the plane and have it fly off into the night. The problem is that the lights are too close together to keep your orientation. If they were spread apart on the wings it might be a different story.
I think the fact is that night flying is very hard and really should only be attempted by an expert. But seeing as how most people using the unit are beginners or amateurs, night flying is probably out of their league.
Great idea, but simply not realistic. Expect to be disappointed and probably lose your plane.

The 4-Site Ultra-Micro Flyer from E-flite is designed to give experienced 3D pilots, who already have a programmable Spektrum™ or JR® 2.4GHz DSM2™ system with dual rates and expo, a thoroughly capable 3D machine that can be flown in most any gymnasium or other large indoor venue. The "secret” behind the Ultra-Micro 4-Site’s awesome 3D capabilities is a unique manufacturing technique that results in foam wing, fuselage and tail parts that are actually lighter, stiffer and more durable than standard sheet foam. These parts are further reinforced with carbon rod and foam bracing that minimizes in-flight flexing and twisting. This exceptionally robust construction, combined with the performance of independent aileron servos, gives the 4-Site a level of control and responsiveness any 3D expert will love. This Plug-N-Play® version of the Ultra-Micro 4-Site comes completely assembled with a Spektrum AR6400L DSM2 Ultra-Micro receiver/ESC with 2 integrated long-throw servos and two AS2000L independent long-throw aileron servos installed. It is ideal for anyone who already owns a DSM aircraft system with programmable dual rates and expo as well as the required Li-Po batteries and charger.

Hobbico FlyZone Select Piper Super Cub RTF Airplane w/2.4GHz Radio - A2527 Review

Hobbico FlyZone Select Piper Super Cub RTF Airplane w/2.4GHz Radio - A2527
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A flurry of Super Cub's have hit the market, it's an embarrassment of riches. Flyzone's entry, their Select Scale Super Cub is one of the best looking Cubs on the shelf, and it comes in a PNP and RTF version. How much more could one ask for?
Well.... a lot, as it turns out.
This Cub looks so good and is so reasonably priced, I guess something had to give. Flyzone has managed to embed all sorts of nasty vices in a simple Cub, and that's really hard to do. They must have people who specialize in complicating the handling of simple planes. I know, know, every review of this plane is 100% raves. Well, the plane isn't a great flier; it flies rather poorly. Get off the websites that are trying to steal your money and step into reality, right here.
The good news is that Flyzone's many screw-ups are, for the most part, fixable. It is a basic Cub underneath, after all. Here how to fix Flyzones long list of rookie mistakes:

First, a list of the largest flaws:
1. There is essentially no dihedral. Perhaps this is true to scale, but the scale Cub is designed to be strong and cheap, first and for most. Their is no reason to duplicate a straight wing in an RC trainer, when you can have massively improved handling by sneaking in a little wing angle--unless--your engineers don't understand basic aerodynamic trades, and Flyzone's clearly don not. There is slight negative stability, meaning, if you set the Cub out of level, it will slowly increase, not decrease both pitch and roll until it hits the ground. This holds true through out the entire flight envelope.
2. There is not enough geometric or aerodynamic washout, impairing slow flight handling. See #8 for a related vice.
3. Empennage construction is too weak; the alignment of the horizontal stabilizer "floats" in flight, inducing slight, unpredictable roll with solid pitch changes. The Cub's width is too wide for it's length, and/or, the size of the vertical stabilizer is ineffective. Adverse yaw is excessive.
4. There is erroneous reverse-differential aileron movement baked into the internal hardware mechanism, exacerbating the adverse yaw problem.
5. The gear suspension is excellent in function, but the top spring wires are too weak to handle a medium bounce.
6. The Cub is significantly underpowered with a full battery charge, and be comes severely underpowered at half battery life. The plane struggles to get over-the-top with a fresh battery, falling off to one side unless the entry is down-hill. Takeoff is tricky unless your extended runway center-line is free of obstacles.
7. Traffic pattern stall tenancy is to snap into a tight, 90 degree nose-low, rapid spin. The worst stall handling I've ever seen. Fixes so far:
1. Insert a nut between the metal wing strut and wing surface to increase dihedral. The increased static stress on the strut seems reasonable, and will likely disappear in the air.
2. Insert both a nut and a washer between the rear struts and wings.
3. Add carbon fiber bracing to the tail section (shown).
4. Mix approx. 10% rudder in the direction of aileron movement.
5. Add carbon fiber bracing (shown).
6. Change to a 9x3.8 prop for a little more pull. Use higher C rate batteries. Switch to a 400 or .10 size motor. The Super Tigre 400 ($20) is a drop-in replacement using the included plastic mount. The Super Tigre .10 ($23) also drops in with 1/4 inch tube spacers (since you can't use the included plastic mount adapter) but the bottom two mounts must be zip tied (this is a much stronger mount than the foam nose). The ST 400 saves weight and adds about 50% more power. The ST .10 is the same weight as the stock motor and adds about 300% more power. If you keep the cheap, low gauge ESC, make sure you don't pro-up the upgraded motors beyond 18 Amps. The ST .10 only pulls 14 Amps max with a 9x3.8 (compare to 54 Amps with the Bf 109 3-blade), and with less than 50% throttle required for spirited flight, and battery life is as good as stock (about 15 minutes from a 1250 mAh 3-cell). With a .10 motor and the small 9x3.8 prop, Thrust-to-Weight ratio is only slightly greater then 1:1. To handle the increased thrust without excessive climb and yaw under power use 2 washers under the top right engine mount (model's pilot perspective) to angle the trust vector down, and use 3 washers on the left mount to create a slight right thrust vector.
7. Fix #2 helps.
The Cub is easy to retrofit with ultra-bright Radio Shack 4-pin square LEDs. These LEDs operate on 2.3V to 5V. They are almost too bright to view at night with one LED wired in series for each Lipo battery cell, and they run hot enough to harden the Cub's "aerocell" foam after a few minutes of stationary use, so consider running 4 in series (12.6V/4 = 3.15V; falling to about 2.5V per LED when the battery is empty).
My Super Cub (shown) has 6 LEDs, 3 wired in series on each side of the plane (the colored Navigation Lights are double-LEDs). The Nav Lights face inward the fuselage, lighting the Cub up like a billboard at night, and reducing the blinding effect when the plane is viewed from the side. You can see the LED on/off micro toggle (also Radio Shack) in the photo, above.
Overall: C-. Great looks, good price, no power (easily fixable +$20), aerodynamic design incompetence (mostly fixable). Pls see my blog for more pictures at [...]

Under powered for the size of plane it is. The NiMh batteries don't hold much of a charge .Maybe I just got a bum set! Not very likely that there were two bad batteries in thr same kit. This is a Japanese knock off! The plane I got in the mail is garbage. It comes with only a few things to put together but the factory production of it makes it almost impossible to get the parts to fit together properly. It looks like a bunch of 8 year olds put this together in a factory somewhere (sadly that's probably the truth). It comes with a worthless assembly manual (VERY vague, leaves out important steps and the pictures don't match up) so you're left trying to find instructions on google. IF you can even find them, the parts are so poorly put together that you'll never be able to get the parts to fit right leaving the rudder/elevator completely off. Unless you have been doing this for a long time you'll never get this thing to fly.
Spend the extra $15 and get the right one. This is pathetic.
