4910 4WD Nitro T-Maxx RTR Review

4910 4WD Nitro T-Maxx RTR
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought 2 T-Maxxs for the boys (7&9) for Christmas. Assembly is simple. Run the antenna through the antenna tube and pin on the body. Truck comes with a DVD that walks you through the break in process. Takes a while but it is simple. The boys handled it with very little help from dad.
After the break in the trucks are ready to run and you can really appreciate the difference between a toy and a nitro powered hobby level truck. These things scream and are super fast. Don't bother unless you have a large open area to run it in.
The trucks seem to be well made and sturdy. We live by the coast so rust is a problem with almost everything but the T-Maxx is all aluminum and plastic so this should not be a problem. The range is obviously more than sufficient since I run them as far as I can see them and never lose control of the truck.
The package comes with a glow plug, nitro filler bottle and all the tools you need to make adjustments, change tires, replace plugs etc.
One of my boys ran his into a steel pole at full speed and damaged the front right suspension and shocks. I looked up the parts and they are all available cheap on EBay. Then I called Traxxas and asked if I should rebuild it myself or send it in and although they assured me the rebuild is simple and inexpensive I think I will let them handle it this time. They said we could just box it up and send it in and they will do the repair for a nominal fee.
Customer service from the repair department was great. I got a real person who was knowledgeable and friendly. That never happens these days.
It is nice to know that no matter what new and innovative methods my kids find to break these trucks, that every single component is easily replaceable and that the parts are inexpensive. There are also hundreds of upgrades out there. I have ordered a new body a roll cage and a wheelie bar as well as some replacement parts to have on hand.
We were a little nervous about getting 'grown-up' race trucks for the boys but having done so I could not be more pleased. These are awesome!
I will update with more on the customer service experience once we get the truck back.
Update
After speaking with the Traxxas repair department I decided to try to do the repair myself. Traxxas only makes the schematics available to dealers but I found some online through a different website and I used this to make a list of all the parts I needed. I ordered them online and when they arrived, my son and I put the truck back together in about an hour. To work on this truck you only need the tools that came with the truck and a #2 phillips screwdriver. In doing the repair I was amazed by how well built the truck is. Everything is built to tight tollerances and there was obviously much thought put into rebuilding the trucks. Every single piece is easily replaced even by a novice such as myself.
Now for my one and only gripe. Traxxas needs to put the schematics on the website. You have a product that is rebuildable but not easily rebuildable without instructions. I understand that you want to give your dealers an edge concerning repairs but the benefit to dealers in this instance does not outweigh the sacrifice created in the trade off by diminishing the overall experience of the end user.

1:10 Scale Electric Stuck-up 4wd Racing Buggy RTR Review

1:10 Scale Electric Stuck-up 4wd Racing Buggy RTR
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My son got this RC car for Christmas 2010. It comes mostly pre-assembled in the box with only minor parts to put on (the antennas, for example). This is a lot of car for the money and it does go fast, especially with an upgraded battery.
Pros:
Comes complete with rechargeable battery, charger and radio control
Easy to use pistol-grip type controller
No set-up required other than adding the batteries and putting on the antennas
Fast and fun
Looks good
Easy to upgrade the battery from most any hobby store for more speed and a longer run time.
Four-wheel-drive is impressive, especially in gravel or dirtCons:
Run time is only about 10 minutes (may be longer in warmer weather).
Uses the same battery in the car for the drive motor and the receiver. When the battery gets low the car will just stop. Releasing the throttle and pulling it will get the car going again but the time between stops gets shorter each time the car is restarted. It's a little annoying but is a good indicator that the battery is almost dead.
Only includes battery for the motor and receiver (in the car), not for the controller. It takes 8 AA batteries.
Rechargeable battery is Ni-Cad and we found out that it's no longer a technology of choice. When I went to buy another battery the people at the hobby store thought the battery I brought was old and was surprised to find that it was brand new. The new battery of choice is NMh and cost between $20 and $60 depending on how many mili-amps you want.
Old Ni-Cad chargers don't work on the new NMh batteries so don't expect to be able to use that charger you had from your old RC car days. The new charger cost about $40.
Included battery charger is not a quick charger
Spare parts are impossible to find. After a week my son ran his car into a mailbox damaging the front, right wheel and suspension. The owner's manual has an exploded view with all the parts and part numbers but there is no information on how to order them and no amount of Internet searching could find parts for that particular car. I took it to a hobby store and they looked over and said that they did not have any replacement parts other than the wheel. The only solution they could offer was to rebuild the entire suspension with all new parts. The company that makes this car (Heng-Long) does make spare parts for other toys they sell (RC tanks, for example) so the possibility exists for them to offer them for this car in the future.
Since the car is only $135 (compared to $95 Tamiya cars without a radio or battery) I thought it was a good deal for a first "real" RC car. Now I'm not so sure. Having spare parts available is worth a lot. I have tried to repair the broken parts and rebuilt some parts from scratch but the repairs didn't last. Now we're stuck with a one-month old toy that is inoperable and awaiting another fix. My best option so far is to give it to the hobby store and see if they can rebuild it (they will have to match both the left and right with new parts) or buy another one and use the broken one for spares. Money that I could have spent to buy a car with available spares to begin with.
Bottom line: I would spend the extra money to get a car with a proven record (Tamyia, Losi, etc.) with spare parts available at any RC hobby store.

Tyco Terrainiac RC Car All Terrain Vehicle (Green) Review

Tyco Terrainiac RC Car All Terrain Vehicle (Green)
Average Reviews:

I bought the terrainiac to chase muskovy ducks out of my backyard. I have a neighbor that feeds the ducks on a daily basis. Too much duck doodoo! The ducks do seem to be mildly afraid of it. However, the terrainiac is not an all terrain vehicle. It gets stuck in mowed grass easily and will not move at all if the grass is wet or too long.
Bottom line is that its lots of fun on paved surfaces. Better get different wheels for any surface not paved.

This truck is cheap, cheap, cheap. We bought two of them, took one look at and sent them back. My husband test ran one of them and immediately there was a problem. And it wasn't operator error--he's an RC expert. It cost $30.00 to send them back but it was worth it. We learned a lesson about buying a no-name RC product over the Internet. This is one category of toy that you want to be durable and of good quality.

For those of you who are looking to buy any type of nitro truck, let me tell you you need alot of patience. I own a traxxas nitro similar to this one and it is alot of fun but requires alot of time, patience, and accurate tunning to get it running. These trucks will also put a big dent in your wallet, nitro fuel costs over $30 dollars and you also have to buy glow plugs. Keep in mind this is a fun hobby, I my self am an rc fanatic, but if you are not willing to put in a lot of time and money into the truck, you may want to consider an electric one.

Fast Lane 7.2V NICD Battery Pack and Charger Review

Fast Lane 7.2V NICD Battery Pack and Charger
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the price this is a horrible battery. This battery has a very very low mAh rating for this style of battery, and it will be very evident the first time you use it! Even though it is a 7.2V battery the mAh rating is only 1600, the mAh rating is among other factors, how long the battery will hold its charge. I recommend a 7.2V battery to be rated 3000 mAh this will provide a much better and longer driving experience. Do a little searching and you will find most 7.2v batteries of this style are rated at least 2600 mAh. I really do not understand how anyone could sell this battery for the prices I have encountered. The educational value of this toy is rated very high by me because if you buy one you will learn very quickly this battery will not hold a charge long enough to enjoy it!

Air Hogs R/C: Zero Gravity Mini Car - Blue Review

We bought this for our son and although it says it drives upside down, it should read, very briefly drives upside down. I can't believe it has not broken yet. It has taken some BIG falls from the ceiling. It just can't hold on long enough to "Drive" It's great for the floor, but we have dogs in the house and because it has a suction on the bottom, it tends to suck up the dog hair off the floor, not such a bad deal if it had a canister so you could dump it out, then I would buy a few more! Good product over all.

This "Off road RC Vehicle" didn't even have time to hit 20 mph. I bought this thing for my son as a Christmas present. We took it out onto a long paved road. It started moving and turning perfectly for about 45 seconds. After that it started to slow down and stopped turning all together. Closer examination revealed that the little piece of plastic holding the body and the springs together had broke. I can't even imagine what would happen if you took it off road. If you ask me, you can't get any decent RC vehicles for under [...]bucks.
If you absoulutely have to buy this go to target. You can get it for [...] dollars there. This thing is joke.

Hot Wheels RC Toyota FJ Cruiser Red Review

Hot Wheels RC Toyota FJ Cruiser Red
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this for my 4 year old niece for her birthday and it was the hit present of the party. Everyone wanted to play with it- boys and girls. 2 months later it is still a hit. It has a great range and is very sturdy and durable. I have seen it roll on carpet and grass (so long as not overly uneven) although it goes alot faster on the hardwoods or on the concrete outside.
This is very adult and kid friendly. My niece is hard on her toys and this is no exception. She loves to run it at full speed into walls and other objects and so far so good. Nothing has cracked or broken. She has even sat on it a time or two and it still runs. Recently she had the brilliant idea to use the flexible antenna to tie another car to this truck and drag them around playing "tow truck". After her father pulled the cars apart, we tried the remote and everything is still a-ok.
As to the educational value: My niece has mastered hand eye coordination and is practically a pro at controlling the car, going backwards and left and right and spinning in a circle. I guess based on this, she has learned something so three stars for that. All her cousins also love to play with it too so she is definitely learning the art of sharing. So another star for that. I did not expect this TOY to teach her calculus and chemisty. It does what I wanted it to do: give her hours of fun.
The only real negative is that she plays with this alot and it goes through the AA batteries. Regardless, I'd rather have this car using AA batteries (which I and her parents always have on hand) rather than one with a rechargeable battery which would rely on us having extra batteries always recharged and at the ready. Or interrupting play time for several hours to allow the battery to charge.
The adults like this too but the other "negative" would be that we adults don't get to play with the truck very often and when we do get to play, it is apparent that the kids are alot better with the remote control than we are.
I am sure that this is nowhere near the quality of the ones thst cost hundreds of dollars but I did compare this to two others that cost more money and this had the best range and ease of the remote control. This truck is perfect for my niece and is fun enough for me and the other adults who have been able to get their hands on it.
One other thing I will note is that I would love to get another Hot Wheels truck for her to have her friends and cousins play too and race with her but all the Hot Wheels trucks seem to be the same 27 mhz thus we would be unable to run two in the same place at the same time. Hopefully Mattel is paying attention.

Proline's new Blazer body for the Mini Rock Crawler is a welcomed new entry in their 1/18th scale line. With really nothing but rockbuggy bodies available, It's nice to have a fullsize rig to choose from. The body comes with all the right decals to give it a realistic appearance, window masks and defined body lines to help with masking. The sides are a little thin, and the proportions are slightly off, but nothing to really get upset about, and I had to cut the wheelwells alot bigger to avoid catching them on the tires at full stuff. If you want to build a 1/18th "scaler" this is a good starting point.
